PhD in Computer Science, Faculty of Automatic Control and Computers, University Politehnica of Bucharest
Florin Pop is a distinguished professor of computer science within the Faculty of Automatic Control and Computers, UPB. His pioneering research spans a wide range of areas, including Large-Scale Distributed Systems (design and performance), Cloud-Fog-Edge Computing (implementation and evaluation), Peer-to-Peer Systems (formal design of P2P-overlays), Big Data (platform integration, data handling), Cybersecurity of distributed systems (protocol design and evaluation, deceptive technologies, systems integration, and apps), and optimization based on numerical methods.
His complete publication record includes more than 300 papers (in journals, conferences, edited books), out of which 30 papers in Q1/Q2 journals, including 15 papers in the Top 10 journals in the field of Computer Science, Theory & Methods (FGCS, IEEE Cloud Computing, IEEE Communication Magazine, IEEE Internet of Things, Information Sciences, JPDC, WWW) and 4 papers in A-ranked conferences (CCGRID, AINA). He published 12 book chapters, co-edited 4 books, and wrote 4 books. In recognition of his outstanding research results, he is the recipient of the following awards: IBM Faculty Award (2012), 6 Best Paper Awards (EUC-2018, IEEE/IFIP IM 2017, ACM Computing Reviews 2015, ISPDC 2013, INCoS-2012, 3PGCIC-2010), Best young researcher in Software Services (2011), Oracle PhD Performance Scholarship (2006-2008), IBM Research Fellowship(2008-2009), the “Gheorghe Cărtianu” award offered by the Romanian Academy in 2017, Outstanding Reviewer Award(Future Generation Computing Systems, Information Sciences, Applied Soft Computing, Journal of Network and Computer Applications, etc.), and Top reviewers in Computer Science (2018). To conclude the proof of the ability of the Centre Director to conduct ground-breaking research, we mention that he is an Associate Editor for Future Generation Computer Systems (Q1, Top10), Soft Computing (Q2), Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Humanized (Q2). He organized special issues in FGCS (Q1, Top10), IEEE Communication Magazine (Q1, Top10), Soft Computing, and JPDC (Q1). He was involved in organizing several well-established conferences (ISPDC, ICCP, AINA, etc.). Between 2018 and 2020, he led the Sustainability of Fog/Edge systems track at the ACM/SIGAPP flagship conference.
“The originality, the independence of our thinking, first of all requires the existence of a unitary, conscious and strong thinking” (Grigore Moisil)
The research project coordination experience (i.e., the autonomy of the scientific activity) proves his expertise and capacity to lead successfully the projects that he coordinates. The list of research fellowships and academic grants where the project leader was the principal investigator (PI) or project coordinator contains the following roles: project leader, principal investigator (PI) or WP leader for 8 projects with more than 5.000.000 euros attracted by coordinated national projects (2014-2024: SPERO, ROBIN-Cloud, DataWay, NetZeRoCities–Governance, National Cybersecurity Strategy), EU projects (Data4Water – H2020-TWINN-2018, Digital4Security-DIGITAL Europe 2024) or COST Actions (Cryptacus-IC1403, cHiPSet-IC1406, AAPELE-IC1303, Keystone-IC1302). He was technical coordinator and research member for 14 EU and 18 national projects (scientific and technical manager in 4 projects), including EGEE (I, II, and III), SEE-GRID, and co-lead the DataCloud@work, Associate Teams Programme, INRIA Rennes – Bretagne Atlantique and UPB. He was selected as an independent scientific assessor for founding calls: Eureka-Eurostars, 2015-2017, 2020-2024 competitions, Innovation Fund Denmark – Grand Solutions (2016), UEFISCDI PNIII-2020 and PNIV-2024, PNRR program, National Science Centre Poland (2016, 2017), National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (FondeCYT, Chile, 2018), Dutch National Research Agenda – Research along Routes by Consortia (NWA-ORC, 2019), MIUR Italy (2021-2022).
Member of international scientific organizations: IEEE senior member, ACM member, OW2: Open-Source Community for Infrastructure Software, euroCRIS – The European Organization for International Research Information and he was member of SPEC – Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation. He is also Member of the Experts Board from the National Register of Experts for the certification of research activity in the National Smart Specialization Area of Digital Economy and Space Technologies. F. Pop is a Member of the Academy of Scientists of Romania (AOSR). He is IEEE Senior member and ACM member.
The following facts support Florin Pop’s ability to train and mentor young scientists. Florin Pop is the Director of the Doctoral School of Automatic Control and Computers, the coordinator of the Parallel and Distributed Computing System research master program, the Director of Innovative Services Laboratory for Smart, Digital and Collaborative Future Society(PRECIS Research Center – UPB), and the co-coordinator of MobyLab – Distributed Systems Laboratory (National Center for Information Technology, UPB). He is a Member of the IEEE Romania Board (2014-2024, secretary, founder), a Member of the Faculty Council (since 2012 to present), and the Co-founder of SmartRDI, a tech hub for the development of mobile and IoT systems, an official spin-off of UPB (2017–present). He has a habilitation to coordinate Ph.D. students since 2015. He coordinated 4 finished Ph.D. theses, and he has presented 12 Ph.D. Students under supervision.
