Favorite quote

“To succeed—materially or immaterially—three definable things are necessary: knowing how to work, knowing how to seize opportunities, and knowing how to create relationships. The rest belongs to the indefinable but real element, which, for lack of a better name, is called luck.” – Constantin Noica

Through her research, academic leadership, and industry collaborations, Monica Dragoicea is dedicated to fostering innovation in AI, smart service design, and sustainable digital transformation. As a PhD supervisor, she actively mentors students in cutting-edge topics at the intersection of AI, sustainability, and trustworthy data analytics.

Shaping the Future of Data-Driven Education

Recognizing the growing importance of advanced analytics in a data-driven world, Monica Dragoicea has played a pivotal role in shaping innovative educational programs at UPB. She is the Academic Coordinator of two flagship programs:

  • Advanced Analytics for Business (ADA) – A master’s program designed to equip students with powerful data analytics and business intelligence skills to drive digital transformation.
  • Business Intelligence Specialist (BIS) – A postgraduate continuous professional development program, developed in collaboration with SAS Institute, tailored for professionals seeking expertise in data-driven decision-making.

Through these programs, she fosters a new generation of data professionals who integrate AI, machine learning, and business intelligence into real-world applications, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for dynamic careers in smart industries and research.

Research & Doctoral Supervision

As a PhD supervisor, Monica Dragoicea is committed to interdisciplinary research that integrates advanced data analytics with sustainability and responsible AI. She is particularly focused on two major research directions:

  1. Climate Change and Reducing the Impact of Human Activities on Nature

Data science and AI play a crucial role in sustainability, supporting the evaluation of climate change effects, green energy initiatives, and CO₂ emission reduction. This research explores predictive and prescriptive analytics for:

  • Smart cities – analyzing operational data for improved sustainability.
  • IoT-based environmental monitoring – using remote sensing to assess climate patterns.
  • Behavioral sustainability – leveraging data-driven insights to encourage eco-friendly practices.
  • Resilience and sustainability in data-intensive smart service systems – ensuring that digital transformation aligns with the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  1. Responsible AI and Trustworthy Data

With AI permeating all aspects of modern life, ensuring fairness, transparency, and accountability is imperative. This research direction tackles:

  • Trustworthy AI – enhancing the explainability and reliability of AI models.
  • Ethical AI governance – ensuring AI-driven decisions comply with legal and ethical standards.
  • AI in service-oriented systems – improving decision-making processes in healthcare, government, and business organizations.
  • Transparency in AI models – developing techniques for better interpretability of machine learning systems.
