Bogdan-Costel MOCANU is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Automatic Control and Computers, Department of Computer and Information Technology of the National University of Science and Technology POLITEHNICA Bucharest. He earned his Ph.D. in 2019 and continuously demonstrated remarkable growth and improvement in his expertise and contributions in multiple research areas, including Peer-to-Peer systems, Distributed systems, Cloud computing, Big Data, Real-time scheduling, and Information security.

If knowledge can create problems, it is not through ignorance that we can solve them. –  Isaac Asimov

His robust academic background, spanning nearly a decade of intensive research and publication, includes a prolific output of 10 ISI-indexed journal articles—two classified in Q1 and four in Q2—and 22 conference papers, complemented by a book chapter indexed in Web of Science. Reflecting his scholarly impact, his work has garnered 129 citations on Google Scholar, including 51 citations on Web of Science, achieving an H-index of 5 (Web of Science), H-Scopus index of 4, and H-Scholar of 7.

His research journey began during his master’s studies in Advanced Software Systems, under the mentorship of Professor Laura Gheorge, where he researches information security, and developed the dissertation thesis entitled “Framework for Security Evaluation of the Performance of Cryptographic Algorithms”. His early academic output included two papers on this subject. With a growing interest in Distributed Systems, Cloud computing, and Peer-to-Peer networks, he started collaborating with professors Florin Pop, Ciprian Dobre, and Valentin Cristea. Following his master’s program, he pursued a PhD. in 2014, researching distributed Peer-to-Peer networks under the supervision of professors Valentin Cristea and Florin Pop. His doctoral thesis, “Trusted Auto-Adaptive Peer-to-Peer Overlays,” defended in 2019, was awarded with Magna Cum Laude distinction, resulting in eight publications: 2 ISI-indexed journal articles, 1 book chapter, and 5 conference papers.

Following his PhD, Bogdan Mocanu maintained a close colaboration with his mentors, Professors Florin Pop and Ciprian Dobre, which led to his career shift from government to academia as Assistant Professor at UPB. In 2021, he also took a Postdoctoral Researcher role within the Doctoral School of Automatic Control and Computers, where he continued exploring new applications of distributed systems, and optimization in real-time systems. His postdoctoral research contributed to projects like “ODIN112 – Real-time Speech-to-Text Transcription System for Romanian Language and Emotional State Recognition in 112 Emergency Calls”, which featured an innovative IVR solution that improved emergency response systems in Romania. His postdoctoral thesis, “Multicriteria Scheduling with Real-Time Constraints,” reflects his enduring commitment to this field. He also collaborated on the “CREAM: Collision Risk Estimation and Automatic Collision Mitigation between Satellites” project, where he contributed to the research and developed of a platform for satellite coordination benefiting the European Space Agency.

In his academic career, Bogdan Mocanu has contributed significantly to both European and national research initiatives. His project leadership is exemplified by his role as project director for two national and one international research grants: (i) “EduCEC – Modern distributed platform for educational applications in Cloud-Edge-Continuum”. This project focuses on a the research and development of a modern distributed educational platform supporting data science education through a Cloud-Edge-Continuum platform with JupyterHub integration over Kubernetes; (ii) “NextEDR – Next generation agent-based EDR systems for cybersecurity threats”. His role in this project was to design and implement a MVP of cybersecurity threat mitigation platform suing a Cloud-Continuum model and (iii) The European “Digital4Sustainability – Accelerating the Digital & Green Transition in the ICT Industry” project that involves the development of courses for VET and SME on digital sustainability.

Additionally, he has actively contributed to multiple international and national projects and research grants. The most significant contributions are: (i) Design and development of an international Master Program in Cybersecurity Management in “Digital4Security – European Masters Programme in Cybersecurity Management & Data Sovereignty” project; (ii) Member in the “NetZeroCities – National Competence Centre and solutions for the development of Climate Neutral and Smart Cities” project and (iii) Lecturing at the summer schools of “LLSF – Education 4.0: Living Labs for the Students of the Future” project, in Bucharest (2023) and Lisbon (2024) on topics related to data science and big data.

In his teaching role, Bogdan Mocanu has taught various courses and applications, including Introduction to Big Data (course – master 1st year), Distributed Systems (project – master 1st year),  Distributed Concurrent Systems (application – bachelor 4th year), Programming languages and programming (application – bachelor 1st year), Numerical Methods (application – bachelor 1st year), Network protocols (application – bachelor 2ndyear) and Advanced Software Engineering (course – bachelor 4th year). Also, since 2023 he is Associated Professor at the Military Technical Academy Ferdinand I, where I teach Parallel and Distributed Algorithms (bachelor 4th year). For the Advanced Software Engineering course, in 2022, Bogdan Mocanu have won a prize awarded by ANIS Romania in collaboration with Adobe Romania for the Big Data section. Throughout his academic career, he has supervised undergraduate and master’s projects and contributed to PhD. coordination teams, establishing himself as a dedicated teacher and researcher in computer science and engineering.
