Artificial Intelligence for SEnsing, Low-Power Networking and ICS SEcurity (AISENSE)
The goal of the AISENSE Laboratory, within the PRECIS Research Institute, is to develop new concepts, methods and experimental prototypes that integrate state-of-the-art ubiquitous sensing, communication and security modalities in intelligent automation applications for industry. Three main research and engineering pillars of our activity thus relate to:
- Intelligent measurement systems that enhance core sensing functions with on board data processing, learning and inference capabilities for real-time analysis of collected multi-dimensional data streams;
- Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) architectures for embedded distributed sensing, computing and low-power scalable communication and their interoperability within open automation architectures for efficiency and productivity;
- Industrial Control System (ICS) Cybersecurity at the interface of technical means for intrusion detection, prevention and anomaly detection, and standardisation and regulatory approaches for increasing OT robustness and seamless IT/OT integration, with extensive domain expertise.
We carry out interdisciplinary research at the interface of automation and industrial informatics with domain verticals in manufacturing, energy, utilities and logistics, with a focus social, economic and environmental sustainability and resilience of artificial intelligence systems.
The AISENSE Laboratory offers a range of research, innovation and engineering services and welcomes new partnerships with private or public sector organisations in the following domains:
- Industrial data management of measurement and engineering data through data quality assessment, domain-specific pre-processing and feature extraction;
- Data pipeline development and data-driven modelling of industry and energy processes using novel machine learning algorithms and time series methods;
- Design, testing and evaluation of distributed sensor systems with low-power mesh protocols for scalable data collection;
- Interoperable and open technologies for cost-effective and productive automation;
- Pre-auditing of ICS cybersecurity solutions integrating SoA methods, algorithms and tools for risk management and regulatory compliance;
- Personnel training for cyber-awareness, cyber-hygiene and basic cyber training of essential operators of complex, networked, automation solutions in accordance to international best practices (NIST, CISA, ENISA).
Members of the laboratory coordinate and participate in multiple research projects with local (UNSTPB), national (UEFISCDI) and international (Horizon Europe, Digital Europe, Horizon Cascade Funding) through a network of collaborations with complementary research groups and innovative companies.
